ADA Compliance for Fitness & Gyms
Equipment access, pool lifts, locker rooms, membership flows, and the accessibility expectations that apply to the entire fitness experience — from the online sign-up to the sauna.
How much equipment does my gym have to make accessible?
At least one of each type of exercise equipment, placed on an accessible route, with at least 30 × 48 in of clear floor space at the machine. You do not have to retrofit every machine — but the gym as a whole must provide comparable access to each modality.
Equipment access (§ 236 of 2010 Standards)
- At least one of each type on an accessible route (cardio, strength by muscle group, stretching, etc.).
- 30 × 48 in of clear floor space at the accessible machine.
- Transfer-friendly layouts — space to pull a wheelchair alongside a bench for transfer.
- Adjustable weight stacks at accessible selectorized machines, operable from a seated position.
Pools & aquatic facilities
- Accessible means of entry. Fixed pool lifts or sloped entries are the two most common solutions. Portable lifts that must be requested and brought out are generally not compliant.
- Spas and whirlpools. Accessible means of entry required.
- Pool deck surfacing. Accessible and slip-resistant throughout the route of travel.
Locker rooms and showers
- At least one accessible locker with an adjustable shelf or hook at accessible height
- At least one accessible bench in the locker area
- One accessible shower per gender category: either roll-in or transfer
- Grab bars, controls at accessible height, movable handheld shower head
Group classes and studios
- Entry to each studio accessible
- Sound systems usable with assistive listening on request
- Class signup and scheduling accessible online
- Instructors trained to modify class for accessibility without calling out the participant
Online sign-up and class booking
Most gyms use Mindbody, Glofox, or a similar third-party platform. The website and booking flow must meet WCAG 2.1 AA:
- Sign-up form labeled inputs
- Calendar and class-picker keyboard-operable
- Waiver forms accessible (tagged PDFs or HTML equivalents)
- Video previews captioned
Cost benchmarks
